Subject: Microsoft’s re-invention of the jpeg
The following story popped up at the inquirer :

“Readers rant over Microsoft’s re-invention of the jpeg” Letters On your sun-run INQ
http://uk.theinquirer.net/?article=38120

Here’s the scoop on this amazing effort in JPEG compression : The article’s findings are quite impressive eh? :

“Data Compression Basics - Part 2”
http://digitalproducer.digitalmedianet. ... d=109739-3

Microsoft’s JPEG-2000 is way way better as the ordinary JPEG format. Knowing how Microsoft works (You know how, and I know how they work) they must have found some highly intelligent coder..

It might be interesting as a background to read the following wikipage about a Dutch guy called Jan Sloot :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Sloot

“Romke Jan Bernhard Sloot (died 1999) was a Dutch electronics technician, who claimed to have developed a revolutionary data compression technique, the Sloot Digital Coding System, which could compress a complete movie down to 8 kilobytes of data - this is orders of magnitude greater compression than the best currently available technology.

Despite the seeming impossibility of such a technique there were investors that saw potential. However, Sloot died of a heart attack one day before an attractive deal was signed with Roel Pieper, former CTO and board member of Philips. Pieper first heard about this “invention” when he was still on Philips’ payroll, and it is said that he left Philips because he believed he could invest in a lucrative deal.”

I might want to add here that the sentence “which could compress a complete movie down to 8 kilobytes of data” should be rewritten as : “which could compress a complete movie-frame down to 8 kilobytes of data”.

They are even gonna make a movie about the story behind Jan Sloot, “De Bron Code”, “The Source Code”. Well the story-line ain’t that hard to guess. Roel Pieper snatched the algorithm for Mister Sloot, after he conveniently dropped dead, and sold the goodies to ehhh Microsoft?

Hey dudes, you better watch yar back. Some nasty truths are gonna be revealed, pretty soon.

http://www.webwereld.nl/articles/45385/vista

Rochester, NY USA ~ 18 August 2000 ~ Experts from the ISO
working group, designated as ISO/IEC JTC1 SC29 /WG 1 and better known as
JPEG, announced today that the standardization of JPEG 2000 Part 1 has
reached Final Draft International Standard status (FDIS). Concurrently,
Motion JPEG 2000 reached the important stage of Working Draft 2.0, the
Verification Model 3.0 and Reference Software are now available to WG 1
experts involved in the development of the Standard. Motion JPEG 2000
(MJP2) is on schedule to become an International Standard in November of
2001.

Dr. Daniel Lee, the WG 1 convener, noted that the release of the
FDIS is the culmination of years of very hard work by WG 1 experts and
signals that implementations can be expected shortly . Dr. Lee pointed out
that Motion JPEG 2000 is advancing quickly. MJP2 will be used in many
different areas: in applications where it is desired to have a single
codec for both still pictures and motion sequences -a common feature of
digital still cameras-, also for very high quality motion pictures
medical imaging and motion picture production- and for video in error
prone environments, such as wireless and the Internet.

Dr. Lee also noted that the technical experts working on the Motion JPEG
2000 standard will be creating the Committee Draft of the proposed
International Standard at the next WG 1 meeting in December . This is an
important stage in the development of the standard. The Committee Draft
represents the WG 1 experts proposed technical recommendations and the
draft of the proposed International Standard. Dr. Lee also noted that at
this stage it is important for parties interested in implementing or
utilizing the proposed Standard become involved to address requirements
for intended applications.”

Motion JPEG 2000 is a Standard for image sequences that leverages the
powerful wavelet based JPEG 2000 Part 1 standard. The Standard will allow
one or more JPEG 2000 compressed image sequences, synchronized audio and
metadata to be stored in the Motion JPEG 2000 file format (MJ2). In order
to facilitate interoperability between other SC 29 standards JPEG 2000
and MPEG Motion JPEG 2000 is targeting compatibility with the JPEG 2000
file format (JP2) and the MPEG-4 file format (MP4). In addition, Motion
JPEG 2000 will allow support for both lossless and lossy compression in a
single codec.

ISO/IEC JTC1 SC 29 WG 1 is the international standardization
organization established to develop standards for image compression. The
next meeting of WG1 will be in New Orleans, LA, USA, 4-8 December 2000.
